Alex Eala’s spectacular rise continues.

Alex Eala, who is only 17 years old, vaulted into the top five of the all-time highest ranked Filipino tennis players in the Open period after achieving a position of 252nd in the most recent global ranking released by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

Alex Eala had already established herself as the best female tennis player to come out of the Philippines when, in August of last year, she reached the 280th spot in the rankings. This accomplishment allowed her to surpass Maricris Fernandez-Gentz, who had held the record for the previous 23 years.

At the time, Fernandez-Gentz held the record for highest-ranked Filipina in history, having achieved a position of 284th in the world.

Alex Eala is now ranked at 252, making him the fourth-highest ranked Filipino tennis player in the history of the Open period. He is only one spot below former standouts on the Philippine men’s tennis team Cecil Mamiit, Eric Taino, and Felix Barrientos.

The record now belongs to Mamiit, who achieved a personal best of 72nd place in the ATP rankings in 1999, the same year he advanced to the second round of both the Australian Open and the US Open.

In 2003, Taino achieved a career-high ranking of 122nd in the world, while Barrientos reached a high point of 180th in 1991. Taino won the boys’ doubles title at the 1992 US Open.

The current champion of the girls’ singles event at the US Open, Alex Eala, also holds the distinction of being the Southeast Asian player who is ranked highest overall in the world.

Peangtarn Plipuech, who is also from Thailand and is 29 years old, is currently tied for 342nd place in the region with Eala.

Alex Eala, who stands 5-foot-9, also made it into the top 20 in Asia, coming in at No. 19 in the rankings.

Alex Eala has a ranking of only 572nd in the globe as recently as March of last year. After capturing her second professional championship at a W25 competition in Chiang Rai, Thailand, a month later, she improved her ranking by 161 places, moving up to 411th overall.

At the conclusion of the month of May, Alex Eala had already moved up to 394th place in the globe. The previous week in the United States, at the Rancho Santa Fe Tennis Club, she competed in the W80 RSF Pro Open and advanced to the quarterfinals. This marked her most recent achievement.
